Dukes Sustainable Engineering Challenge

Posted: 20th October 2026

Year 11 and Miss Blackburn set off for Dukes House this week, ready for the Dukes Sustainable Engineering Challenge, where we were the youngest team. After a talk from a former employee of Tesla, we were challenged to built the most efficient wind turbine we could. After much discussion, and a few sneaky looks at other teams, we build a double ended turbine that could withstand the wind from a Dyson hairdryer. As Dyson is a champion of British engineering, this felt rather appropriate.
After lunch, we had to create a presentation based on a brief. We were asked to design an eco-friendly school in California, and despite our lack of access to technology, we came up with some excellent ideas. After presenting our ideas to the room, we were thrilled to be crowned winners for the best presentation!
